This sculpture portrays Goddess Lakshmi in her standing form upon a lotus pedestal, a representation that emphasizes her role as the bestower of abundance, fertility, and auspiciousness. She is depicted with four arms — the upper pair holding lotus buds, symbols of purity and spiritual blossoming, while the lower hands are in abhaya (assurance) and varada (blessing) mudras.
Crafted through the lost-wax casting process, this piece follows the Chola bronze tradition, where the divine is rendered in flowing lines, intricate ornamentation, and balanced posture. The use of Panchaloha—the sacred alloy of gold, silver, copper, tin, and zinc—connects the icon to Agamic prescriptions that view the alloy as embodying cosmic energies.
The antique finish deepens the contours and textures, echoing the timeless bronzes of South Indian temples. Standing Lakshmi in this form is often installed in shrines and homes to invite both śrī—grace, prosperity, and harmony—into the space.
This sculpture is not only an object of worship but also a continuation of an artistic and spiritual lineage that has defined South Indian temple culture for over a millennium.
