The Ryouta works because it doesn't try too hard. The rattan panel is in the headboard only. The frame underneath is clean-lined hardwood. Nothing competes with the rattan for attention, so the headboard reads as a considered detail rather than decoration for its own sake.

Handwoven rattan panels are not uniform. Each one differs slightly in tension and weave pattern. This is how you tell hand-woven from machine-pressed: tap it. A genuine woven panel has a hollow resonance. A pressed cane-pattern sheet thuds. This headboard is the former. The weave is also slightly irregular because it is done by hand, and each panel varies slightly as a result.
